A 273rd Infantry Regiment
An early member of Co A 273rd Inf Rgt was Piece G. Rice who was drawing
comic cartoons for Green Hornet, Zebra, Captain Freedom and Black Cat before being called to serve
in WII and the 69th Infantry Division training at Camp Shelby, MS. It is not know when he joined the 69th but he is in a company photo taken
in September, 1943.
He served as the Communications Sergeant of Co A. He was in or near the Napoleon Monument, Leipzig, April, 1945, attested by his cartoon drawings featured in the Time-Life G. I. Diary television production. An eight panel orginal strip used in this production is now in the Leipzig Museum.
Pierce Rice was an early active member of "The Fighting 69th Infantry Division Association" serving as a director, attendee at Reunions and contributor of drawings for special occasions.
At the August, 1963 Reunion, Nassau, NJ, presided over by the late Loar
Quickle, a drawing by Rice depicting the 20th
Anniversary of the 69th's activation was presented to Major General Charles T.
"Buck" Lanham who was the cadre regimental commander of the 272nd Inf
Rgt. General Laham gave this
drawing to Joe Lipsius who was at the Reunion and one of his staff officers.
